What do you want to do when you grow up?
Like most children, my answer to this question changed dramatically between the ages of 6 and 16 ranging from a soccer player and pilot to eventually a civil engineer. At no stage however did it cross my mind that I’d like to travel around the world on a motorbike.
I’ve been very fortunate to have had the opportunity to attend excellent educational institutions. I completed high school at Cheltenham Girls High School. From here I went straight to the University of New South Wales where I completed a Bachelor of Engineering (Civil).
While at university I met my now husband Stu who was studying to be a naval engineering officer - who can resist a man in uniform!! Stu and I played in the same soccer club and it didn't take long for us to find each other and fall in love. Shortly after moving in together we adopted Skyla who filled our hearts, two became three and the three of us became a family.
So where do motorbikes fit into this profile?
I started out on a 50cc scooter that belonged to my brother in law, Greg. After 6 months of getting comfortable on the road I bought my first bike, a Yamaha Virago 250cc. I thought I was the hottest thing on wheels until I got my full riders licence and upgraded to a 2011 Harley Davidson 883 Superlow. Cruises are easy for me to ride with my height (or lack of) so learning to ride an adventure bikes is going to be an adventure in itself!
This trip has been a long time in the making. Stu and I have been saving and planning for years but as the seasoned travellers tell me, no matter how much planning you do you can’t plan for everything. I guess that’s what makes it an adventure and I’m looking forward to the challenges laying ahead of me.
